Critics have dubbed ‘Cashmere Mafia’ as the new ‘Sex and the City’ but the two shows really are completely different. ‘Sex and the City’ deals with sex and how it relates to the four character’s lives, whereas ‘Cashmere Mafia’ focuses more on the character’s careers and how that relates to their lives (but sex is included!).
Compare, for instance, Caitlin's super fab wardrobe during (what else!) her fashion show meltdown, Juliet talking business on a date and Zoe looking fab while she...quits her job (um), to a trailer featuring the SATC gals chatting it up about--you guessed it---Sex and dating in NY. Both teams of ladies look fashionably fabulous, but the clothes highlight two very different aspects of a woman's life. For Cashmere, sex and love is merely an afterthought. They've got a city to conquer and men to squash under their Gucci heels.
Patricia Field, who was the costume designer for ‘Sex and the City’, is also responsible for ‘Cashmere Mafia’ fashions—surprise, surprise! Just like in SATC, the women on Cashmere Mafia are dressed to impress – the only difference is that they can actually afford the clothes they wear (hmm, maybe all that focusing on your career business actually pays off!). Come now, are we really expected to believe that a sex columnist can afford 100 pairs of $400 shoes? A workaholic magazine editor, yes. A columnist who we never really see working? Not so much.
The frills and dresses on ‘Cashmere Mafia’ are definitely hard to get (in more ways than one!), but if you break it down, the concept is quite simple: These women are too rich to care. They wear over the top furs, gigantic earrings, expensive bags, and intricate hairstyles because they can! If their money can buy it then they will have it.

Out of all of the characters on the show Lucy Liu’s character Mia Mason is the most fun. She’s the “Carrie” of the bunch, as she takes the most chances with fashion. A standard Mia look would include a brightly colored fur coat, enormous vintage earrings, a Gucci handbag, and a wide belt cinched over an expensive designer suit.
